Abstract

RUDKI – AN ANTIQUE MINING CENTRE IN THE ŚWIĘTY KRZYŻ MTS

Summary
Already during the inter-war period attention was paid to the big amount of iron slag to be found on the fields and in the woods and even on the high slopes in the Święty Krzyż Mts area. In the 1955 the researchers of the primary slag of this region were begun and after 5 years 37 furnace stands were discovered as well as the traces of 1661 earth furnaces were investigated.
The materials received up to now allow to date the beginnings of Polish metallurgic industry back to the so called Roman influences period, i.e. II-V century of the new era.
The most important event was the encountering of the old workings during the works in pyrite mine at Rudki.
In the “Staszic” strip mine the old gangways, fragments of shafts, wooden tools, ceramics and Roman coins of the Vespasian and Trajan period has been found.
