Abstract

PROBLEM OF BOUNDARY BETWEEN SILURIAN AND DEVONIAN IN POLAND

Summary
The main object of the present paper is a stratigraphical relation of the Upper Silurian in Poland, chiefly of the profiles obtained as a result of deep borings, to the long ago occurring correlation differences in Europe, between the Rhine and Czech Upper Silurian.
The stratigraphy of Silurian deposits in Poland illustrate the accompanying tables (see the Polish text), in which for the first time the Polish nomenclature of layers with respect to the area of Święty Krzyż Mts and to the east-European platform is introduced.
On the basis of the rich Polish materials the authors confirm that the previous position of horizon of Monograptus hercynicus Perner in Bohemia and Thuringia that was believed to be a top of the uppermost Silurian is erroneously interpreted. In the profile of the bore-holes in northern and eastern Poland, the assemblage of graptolites, which falls below the Podlasie layers, i.e. at the level of Czech equivalents of Pridol layers, has numerous forms (in ascending order) Monograptus microdon Reinh. Richter, Monograptus uniformis Pribyl and probably Monograptus hercynicus Perner. In connection with these facts the Pridol layers in Bohemia are younger than those of the horizon with Monograptus hercynicus Perner, hence younger than Lochkov layers (see stratigraphical scheme and Tabl. V of Polish text).
Authors do not agree with the H. Jaeger’s opinion that Monograptus angustidens Pribyl is a synonym of Monograptus uniformis Pribyl form.
