Abstract

REMARKS ON BITUMEN OCCURRENCE POSSIBILITIES IN THE CARBONIFEROUS DEPOSITS OF THE LUBLIN LOWERING

Summary
In the Lublin region area, under the Jurassic and Cretaceous deposits, thick series of Carboniferous sediments occurs. The thickness of these deposits increases from some tens metres in the marginal zone of the Słowatycze elevation, up to approximately 2000 metres within axial portions of the marginal syncline (Fig. 1). A sharp increasing in thickness is thought to be the result of a flexural bend, connected with the upper slope of the crystalline basement (Fig. 2). It is related to the occurrence of the Carboniferous members, younger than the Westphalian A, appearing westerly of it.
In the drillings, recently carried out at Tyszowce and Dorohucza, the oil traces in form of seepages and impregnations of core were encountered in the Visean and Namurian series. The observations of appearances mentioned above, with reference to the tectonic conditions of the Lublin lowering, permits to assume that further investigations may lead to discovering of oil and natural gas deposits.
The area of the Lublin lowering appears namely within the peripheral zone of the Ukrainian shield margin, having been subjected, during the Carboniferous time, to the strong plunging movements that gave rise to the accumulation of the considerably thick deposits. The reduction conditions having often governed in this basin, led to the creation of hydrocarbons; on the other hand, the occurrence of large amounts of sandstone series at the Carboniferous period, caused the suitable circumstances for the oil reservoir formation. Moreover, there are also the suitable anticlinal structures that are believed to be the possible traps for hydrocarbons.
