Abstract

APPLICATION OF MAGNETIC METHOD IN THE ARCHAEOLOGICAL RESEARCHES

Summary
The paper deals with use of the geophysical magnetic method for location of the archaeological sites in the antique metallurgy area in the region of the Holy Cross Mountains. The geophysical surveys performed there, have yielded numerous interesting materials allowing to establish the right field work methods specific for such a kind of scientific researches. Magnetic surveys in the area of occurrence ofthe fire-places for iron ore smelting were made in the Nowa Słupia region. During these investigations the magnetic magnetometers of A. Schmidt type (prism balance) and of G. Fanselau type (universal balance) were used.
A decisive factor for using the magnetometry during location of the fire-places is a very high content of metallic iron to be found within the several slag blocks.
The method described above, diminishes to the minimum the digging works and gives simultaneously the maximum research effects.
