Abstract

COMETS AND THEIR STRUCTURE

Summary
Comets as space bodies were up till now the domain of astronomic studies. New possibilities for other types of investigations occurred during preparing and realization of scientific experiment in 1986 when five space probes were send from the Earth to meet the Halley comet. Author presented here an outline of current knowledge of comet structure, based on results of the Halley comet studies. Model of comet nucleus structure (Fig. 3), proposed by author, was also discussed. Comet nucleus is covered with black, massive crust, up to several• cm thick, composed of mineral grains (silicates), glued with organic carbon compounds. Under this crust occurs strongly cavernous layer, in which processes of melting, vaporization of ice, gases and volatile fractions of organic matter take place, Such layer could have the thickness up to several meters. Under it concentrates strongly porous, frozen comet substance, composed of ice, frozen gases, organic matter and silicate grains.
