Abstract

PLEISTOCENE OF CENTRAL POMERANIA AND THE BALTIC SEASIDE AGAINST TL AGE INDICES OF SEDIMENTS

Summary
In the Thermoluminescence Laboratory of theGdańsk University 37 samples of tills and silts from boreholes and exposures collected during geologic mapping have been dated. The dates can be generally subdivided into two age intervals: 30-50 and 60-80 ka BP (Fig. 5). They should be connected with the two first phases of the Vistulian Glaciation although these dates . are 10-20 ka younger than the ones ascribed to the phases of this glaciation (cf. 11, 12). In most sections there are serious disturbances in a sequence of dates (Fig. 2 and 3). These anomalies cannot be easily explained as neither glaciotectonics nor sampling errors are to be taken into account Suprisingly old is the age of ablation tills from the Damnica and Polanów plateaux, being 40-60 ka i.e. considerably different than in other authors’ opinions. Collected data suggest that variability of TL age indices depends not only on physical reasons, but also on lithology of studied material and sampling method (borehole or exposure). Therefore, stratigraphic schemes of the Quaternary of Poland, prepared with a use of TL datings, become again controversial.
