Abstract

STRATOTYPE OF PLEISTOCENE DEPOSITS IN PRZEDGÓRZE SUDECKIE: PRELIMINARY REPORT

Summary
The Ząbkowice brickyard, Sudetic Foreland, SW Poland (Fig. 1) have a very complete, 26 m thick Pleistocene sequence. It comprises, from the bottom upwards (Fig. 2): fluvial sands and gravels, lower EIsterian till with a palaeosol in its uppermost part, periglacial slope diamictons and sands, Upper Elsterian till, Saalian proglacial deposits and the Saalian (Odranian, Drenthe) till. This is the most complete Pleistocene sequence in the region, which indicates that at least three Scandinavian ice-sheets have come up to the Sudeten Mountains. The petrography of gravels show that source area for fluvial deposits lies in the Sowie Mts. gneiss massif (15 km NW from the brickyard). On the other hand, both till fabric and gravel petrography show that the ice-sheet, which deposited the lower EIsterian till has come from the north, paralellel to the Ślęża River valley and collected rocks mostly from the Niemcza Zone, including serpentinites. The middle EIsterian till indicates the glacial palaeotransport from NE (from Oława River valley) to SW (no serpentinites in the till). The uppermost, Saalian deposits were, most probably, deposited from the same direction as the upper EIsterian till (Fig. 3 & 4, Table 1).
