Abstract

SILICIFICATION OF THE CAMBRIAN SANDSTONES FROM POLISH PART OF THE PERIBALTIC SYNECLISE IN RESULTS OF THE CATODOLUMINESCENCE STUDIES

Summary
Main processes caused strong diagenesis of the Cambrian sandstones from the Peribaltic syneclise were silification and mechanical and chemical compaction. Main silification phase was early diagenetic in age and consisted in SiO2 crystalization within free pore voids in form of regeneration quartz rims. The silica source were fluids squeezed from clay packages intercalating with sandstones. Second silification phase took place during katagenesis and caused dissolution of quartz grain and regeneration rims in high perssure conditions as well as secondary quartz crystalization and microstylolite generation. The microphotos using catodoluminescence phenomen are very helpful in studies on silification processes in sandstones (Fig. 2, 4).
