Abstract

USE OF GRAVIMETRY AND SEISMICS IN RECOGNITION OF GEOLOGICAL STRUCTURE OF CARBONIFEROUS ROCKS Summary The paper presents the use of surface gravimetry and seismics in recognition of geological structure of Carboniferous rocks in estimating hard coal resources, on the example of surveys carried out in the Lublin and Upper Silesia Coal Basins by the Geophysical Enterprise. Semidetailed and detailed surveys carried out on that subject in the last years are summarized. Attention is paid to a remarkable usefulness of surface geophysical surveys which together with drillings supply a vast amount of geological data on spatial arrangement of strata, changes in thickness, wedging out, faults, etc., which are indispensable in estimations of coal deposits. There are discussed new trends in surface geophysical surveys of coal deposits which are aimed at the increase of a accuracy and resolution. Geophysical and especially detailed geophysical studies appear highly effective so it is suggested to extend the projects of detailed seismic surveys to cover the whole perspective areas of hard coal deposits.
