Abstract

GEOCHEMICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF BASAL DEPOSITS OF THE ZECHSTEIN IN THE FORE-SUDETIC MONOCLINE

Summary
The contents of Cu, Pb, Zn, Co, Mo, V, and Ag in Lower Zechstein deposits of the Fore-Sudetic Monocline were analysed. The geochemical studies showed that the distribution of the above mentioned elements is nonuniform and depends on litology of deposits forming borehole profiles of the top parts of the Weissliegendes horizon, lower horizon of Werra limestones, horizon of copper-bearing shales, and basal parts of upper horizon of Werra limestones and dolomites. The changes recorded seems related to mineral composition of deposits and physico-chemical characteristics of their sedimentary environment. In the Weissliegendes sandstones forming bas al part of the Werra series, the studied elements occur in trace amounts and their distribution is irregular. A marked trend to spatial ordering of the majority of these elements, depending on sedimentary facies, is found in deposits of the copper-bearing shale horizon. Rocks of this horizon are characterized by increased concentrations of Cu, Zn, Pb, Ni, Co, Mo, V, and Ag in the whole studied zone, with trend to increase towards the north along with increase in depts of the sedimentary basin. Accumulation of these elements in the copper-bearing shale horizon took place with active and passive contribution of biophase and processes of sorption on clay mineral particles.
The Werra carbonate horizon is characterized by increase in content of the studied elements in marly dolomite deposits directly overlying copper-bearing shale horizon. The deposits display a large concentration of Pb and Zn, with clearly marked vertical and horizontal zonation.
