Abstract

METALLIFEROUS SEDIMENTS •ON MID-OCEAN RIDGES: ORIGIN, CLASSIFICATION AND GEOCHEMICAL IMPLICATIONS

Summary
Combined geological, geochemical, isotopic and geophysical data indicate that sea water penetrates the oceanic lithosphere to considerable depths and circulates through hot rocks along active mid-ocean ridges. The sea water is eventually emitted as hydrothermal solutions back onto the ocean floor.
Discharge of these solutions (essentially metal-laden hot sea water) may result in the formation of three types of marine metalliferous sediments (oxide-, silicate-, and sulfide-facies), depending on the environment into which the discharge takes place. The interaction between sea water and the oceanic crust appears to be an extensive phenomenon whose possible influence on the geochemical balance of at least some elements (e.g., magnesium) may be very impressive.
