Abstract
CHARACTERISTICS OF ASH CONTENT IN COAL FROM THE UPPER SILESIA COAL BASIN
Summary
All coal and coal shales occurring in 28 boreholes drilled by the Upper Silesian Department of the Polish Geological Institute in those parts of the Upper Silesia Coal Basin that were relatively poorly explored, were studied. Clay content in 1254 coal samples and 28 samples of coal shale was determined according to the procedure suggested by Swanson and Huffmann. It was found that in the Upper Silesia Coal Basin the most frequent is coal of low clay content (Table) although there is a considerable stratigraphical and regional variation of clay content in the coal (Table, Fig. 2, 3). In particular it was found that the frequence of occurrence of coal of low clay content increases towards the paralic series and eastwards. From the ecological point of view this coal seems to be especially useful for combustion purposes.
