STRUCTURAL EFFECTS OF RELAXATION PROCESS IN UNCONSOLIDATED DEPOSITS FROM THE VICINITIES OF NOWE CZAPLE

Summary
The phenomenon of relaxation of geological materials is connected with their elastic properties. Structures formed in result of this process in massive rocks were discussed and analysed in several geological and geotechnical reports. In the course of works carried out by the present author at Łuk Mużakowa in the vicinities of Nowe Czaple, there were found several discontinuities in overconsolidated and strongly glacitectonically disturbed clay and loamy series of the Tertiary (Figs. 3, 4, 5). The studies showed that relaxation gives also rise to structural effects in unconsolidated deposits. Providing that the series was overconsolidated in the past, there may originate networks of fractures and faults normal and parallel to the surface of relaxating massif. Parallel faults and fractures represent the proper relaxation structures whereas the normal ones are the products of surface strains resulting from drying and tension. Taking into account. the rheological properties of unconsolidated deposits, we arrive at the conclusion that structural effects of relaxation may occur in cohesive deposits only. It follows, therefore, th.at normal faults recorded in sands in the vicinities of Nowe Czaple are gravitational despite of the fact that they originated in result of the same strain pattern as those from the clay series. The studies on the problems connected with rheological properties of unconsolidated deposits markedly contribute to the knowledge of glaci-tectonic disturbances and, therefore, are of a marked importance for the studies on Quaternary paleogeography.
