Abstract

SOIL STUDIES WITH THE USE OF STATIC SCREW SOUND

Summary
The use of screw sound in the studies on Quaternary soils varying in genesis and cohesiveness is discussed in the paper and illustrated with several examples. The problems connected with maximum depth range of the sound and the influence of depth factor on accuracy of measurements are discussed. Friction occurring between the sound rod and particles of cohesive or weakly cohesive soil results in an increase of the number of halfrotations in sounding. Comparative studies made by the use of the screw, pressed-in, and light and heavy dynamic sounds made it possible to determine correlations between the parameters measured and to precise principles of interpretation of results obtained for noncohesive soils.
