Abstract

ON THE NECESSITY OF STUDIES OF INARTICULATE BRACHIOPODS Summary Inarticulate brachiopods are nowadays the subject of a special interest of numerous paleontologists throughout the world. The existing knowledge of their internal and external structure and systematics is still insufficient. In result of intense geological studies carried out in Poland there were gathered rich collections of inarticulate brachiopods extractable from rock with the use of chemical methods on account of their phosphate-calcareous shells. Using this method of extraction there was gathered a rich material of brachiopods from older Paleozoic rocks. The collections comprise specimens supplementing available data on hitherto known species as well as numerous new forms displaying highly interesting internal and external structures. Inarticulate brachiopods are nowadays considered as highly important stratigraphic tool and are used for zonal subdivisions and correlations of profiles from different parts of the world. The first symposium on inarticulate brachiopods took place in Leningrad in 1977. In the next symposium, planned for 1979 in Warsaw, should take place numerous specialists from Europy and other continents.
