Abstract

Summary The Czarnobyl disaster caused anxiety in Polish population and a fear of ionizing radiation. The radiation from nuclear power is perceived by many people to be greatest health risk. Not many know, that the main source of radiation risk is related to radon, the invisible and odorless radioactive gas, produced as a result of natural decay of the uranium-thorium range. A relation between its occurrence and areas build of rocks containing traces of radioactive element and in the fault zones, being the way of its migration, is evident. Radon finds its way into places where we live through cracks in the buildings and wentilation canals. It is especially dangerous in winter, when underpression conditions in buildings act as a suction pump and the izolation of doors and windows decreases the access of the fresh air. Radon founds its place in waters and is relased especially during the heating of water what produces its higher concentrations in bathroom in relation to the other parts of the apartments. In lung it caused the injury of cellular structure also of the DNA what stimulates the cancerogenous processes. In USA it has been considered as one of the most important cancerogenous hazards. In Poland maesurements to determine the radon concentration in buildings have been not carried out. Authors propose the maesurements in the areas shoving the higest risk, especially in the region of Sudetes Mts.
