Abstract

CONDITIONS OF ORIGIN OF SULFUR DEPOSITS IN THE MIOCENE OF THE UKRAINIAN PART OF CARPATHIAN FOREDEEP

Summary
Sulfur deposits related to the Middle Miocene sulfate rocks of the Carpathian Foredeep in West Ukraine originated due to metasomatosis of gypsum. This is indicated by common presence of calcite and sulfur pseudomorphs after gypsum crystals. The main sulfur-forming factors are subsurface solutions and hydrocarbons, oxygen-bearing near-surface solutions and possibly sulfate-reducing bacteria. The process of sulfur ore formation began shortly after Badenian deposition due to the tectonic restructuring of the area. Subsequently, the restructuring repeated before the Sarmatian. The process of sulfur deposit formation finished due to intensive subsidence of the outer zone of the Carpathian Foredeep.
