Abstract

PALEOGEOGRAPHY OF THE LOWER BADENIAN OF THE WÓJCZA-PIŃCZÓW RANGE

Summary
Two points of view predominate in interpretations of paleogeography of the Lower Badenian of the Wójcza-Pińczów ridge. According to one of them Lower Badenian marls and organodetrital limestones originated in a narrow embayment of tectonic origin, and according to the other - detrital limestones were deposited in open sea zone. The paper presents a brief discussion of history of deposition and some evidence in favour of sedimentation in open sea zone. This argumentation is based on a close similarity of these rocks and deposits originating at present in the Adriatic and Mediterranean Sea. Various types of Lithothamnium limestones built of large interconnected or trailing red seaweed colonies were originating on submarine elevations and represent ancient equivalents of "biologically consolidated" areas known from the Adriatic and "coralligenous biocenosis" reported from the Mediterranean Sea. Organodetrial limestones deposited in depressions between the elevations correspond to the Nullipora facies of "coastal detritic biocenosis". Both types of deposits originate at present in open sea zone, under conditions of strong current activity and low rate of deposition.
