Abstract

THE ROLE OF ALKALITES IN CEMENT AND THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THEIR AMOUNT AND POSSIBILITIES OF USE OF CEMENT PRODUCTION OF CONCRETE FROM VARIOUS AGGREGATES (PART I)

Summary
The paper discusses the problem of alkalinity of cements, which is directly connected with the possibility of their utilization for production of artificial aggregates containing components which react with.
It is shown that alkaline oxides make inevitable components of Portland klinker; however, through a number of technological operations, the amount of alkalies in cement can be reduced or increased. The paper further discusses negative effect of alkaline oxides both on the process of production of cements and on their technical properties. Aggression of alkalies in relation to certain aggregates in concrete and resulting alkaline corrosion of concrete segments and buildings resulting from this aggression are illustrated. It is found that the production of low-alkaline cements makes it possible to eliminate corrosion of concrete caused by alkalies, and thus to make optimal use of a wide array of artificial aggregates.
