Abstract

ALTERATIONS OF KAOLINITE IN KAOLIN INTERCALATIONS OF COAL SEAMS AT THE CONTACT WITH IGNEOUS INTRUSIONS

Summary
The paper deals with alterations of layered silicates during hyper-, dia-, cata- and metagenesis. The main problem is connected here with the character and nature of these alterations, i.e. whether they proceed mainly in solid crystalline phase in such a way that there remain whole structural blocks with partly rotated tetrahedral or octahedral fragments of the ilnitial phase and with ihe possibility for cations to change their positions, or through pseudomorphisation connected with solution and recrystallization. The studies covered samples from the Donetsk, Upper Silesian and Lower Silesian Basins. Infrared spectroscopic analysis of samples previously studied with the use of other techniques and the results of comparative analysis of mineral-chemical composition of samples of intercalations occurring in and neighboring the contact zone of intrusive body, gave further support to the view that kaolinite present in intercalations from the contact zone is being alterated into di-octahedral mica, and tonstein - in metatonstein.
Further studies of tonsteins and metatonsteins should solve the question whether these alterations are of the transformation type or the whole process is being repeated.
