Abstract

ON THE ROLE OF GEOPHYSICS IN WORKS CONNECTED WITH THE VISTULA PROGRAMME Summary On the basis of analysis of results of previous surveys, the effectiveness of geophysical methods• used for the needs of hydrotechnical building was estimated taking into account wide and. complex aims of the "Wisła Programme". The first part of the paper deals with geophysical surveys carried out in the last twenty years in connectio with designing cascades on the Vistula River and its tributaries. In discussing history of developments in engineering geophysics, references are made to major geological-engineering problems usually solved with the use of geoelectric, seismic and radiometric methods. A general location of the completed surveys is given. The range of geophysical methods used for recognition of geological structures of foundation soils, in studies on groundwater dynamics, and determination of physico-mechanical properties of soil medium is given. A special attention is paid to selection of the used methods, degree of their accuracy and mastering, advantages and disadvantages as well as possibilities of use. With reference to surveys of non-cohesive rocks and bedrock, attention is paid to specific nature of works carried out in the Polish Lowlands and Carpathians as it influences the technics and methods of taking measurements. The final part of the paper deals with the major advantages of geophysical surveys, predestinating them to wide use at various stages of designing, construction and use of hydrotechnical structures within the framework of the "Wisła Programme".
