Abstract
GEOLOGICAL MAPPING IN THE VISTULA RIVER DRAINAGE BASIN Summary The paper presents marked achievements of the Geological Institute in the field of geological mapping of the country, especially the area of the Vistula River drainage basin, evidenced by numerous published atlases, synthetic elaborations, and various regional and special maps in scales ranging from l:10,000 to l: 3,000,000. A special attention is paid to the published and currently prepared map series, representing the basic material for the practice: Review Geological Map of Poland in the scale l :300,000, Geological Map of Poland in the scale 1:200,000, and Detailed Geological Map of Poland in the scale 1:50,000. The three editions (the first of which, published in the years 1946-1955 and widely used thereafter for several years as basic cartographic material comprising the whole area of the country, is nowadays of mainly historical importance) give coherent and uniform image of the area of the Vistula River and its drainage basin. The Geological Map of Poland in the scale 1:200,000, representing the result of review mapping works supplemented with analyses of rich geophysical and borehole data and with geological cross-sections and profiles, is at present at the final stage of preparation to print. The current major tasks of the Institute and the State Geological Survey in the field of geological mapping include are connected with intensification of mapping works to complete and publish the Detailed Geological Map of Poland in the scale l :50,000 as soon as possible. The pa per presents the accepted premises of detailed mapping works planned for the years till 1990, especially in the Vistula River drainage basin. In that time, about 290 sheets of that map, covering the drainage basin area, should be completed. The map is being prepared taking into account a wide array of problems of applied geology from the point of view of needs of national economy.Downloads
