Abstract

PROBLEM OF PROTECTION OF HIGH BANKS AND HISTORICAL TOWNS ALONG VISTULA RIVER VALLEY Summary The change in natural conditions, forced by the rise of water level in the Vistula River in result of works connected with the Wisła Programme, should bear a marked influence on high river banks. The paper presents a summary of studies on abrasion and surface mass movements, carried out during the first 10 years of exploitation of the Włocławek, the first reservoir of the Vistula cascade system, in the Polish Lowlands. The problems of protection of historical towns situated along the river are discussed on the example of Płock and Sandomierz. The methods of geological surveys are presented with reference to many-years' experience and the main directions in bank protecting works are shown. The necessity to initiate studies on the above problems is emphasized.
