Abstract

ON THE STATE OF KNOWLEDGE AND USE OF ORDINARY GROUNDWATER RESOURCES IN THE VISTULA RIVER CATCHMENT AREA

Summary
Recoverable resources of ordinary groundwaters in catchment area of the Vistula River are estimated at 7.6 km3/y with reference to the present knowledge of their supply and the mode of occurrence. Distribution of water resources is not uniform because of variability in nature of water-bearing rocks and conditions of occurrence, especially in thickness of aquifers, depth of occurrence, permeability and degree of isolation from terrain surface. The resources are the largest in northern and central parts of the catchment area, especially in the latter. In these areas, they are mainly related to rocks of pre-Quaternary age and conditions od: water supply and retention are good.
The resources are the smallest in southern part of the catchment area.
At present, 62% of recoverable resources are disposed for use by the existing or designed intakes and the current rate of exploitation is about 14%. It appears necessary to carry out more careful exploitation of groundwaters and to protect them from pollution. Taking this into account, an observational network and bank of data on water use are being organized.
