Abstract

GEOLOGICAL STRUCTURE AND TRENDS IN EVOLUTION OF THE VISTULA RIVER VALLEY Summary The course of the Vistula River valley is adjusted to synclinal areas of the Alpine age. The areas are nowadays subsiding; the exception is here the zone of gorge through the Middle Polish Uplands, characterized by positive vertical crustal movements. In the regional scale, the valley is using depressions of various origin and age, from depressions with old, pre-Quaternary foundations in the Carpathians to those formed due to the wane of the North-Polish Icesheet in northern parts of the Polish Lowlands. Valley floor, built of Holocene deposits, is still insufficiently known. The interference of Man ends the evolution of the valley controlled by natural processes only.
