Abstract

PALEOMAGNETIC STUDIES IN THE HIGH TATRA SERIES (SOUTHERNPOLAND)

Summary
Preliminary paleomagnetic results from the middle/upper Jurassic and lower Cretaceous rocks of the high-tatricunits, Polish TatraMts, has been reported. Characteristic directions from the para-autochtonous unit in the Cracow Gorge were acquired before tectonic deformations and they are in good agreement with the paleodirections from the Sub-Tatric (Bobrowiec) unit. The overthrusted high-tatricCzerwoneWierchy unit reveals counter-clockwise rotated directions. The Jurassic and Cretaceous paleomagneticdata from the TatraMts, asweIl as from the other massifs of the Inner West Carpathians are more compatible with coeval data from Europe, than with the coeval data from African or Adriatic plate. The width of hypothetical Mesozoic oceanic domains between the European plate and the inner Carpathian domain is below the resolution of the paleomagnetic method.
