Abstract

HETEROLITHIC TIDAL DEPOSITS IN THE PARALIC SERIES, UPPER CARBONIFEROUS OF THE UPPER SILESIA COAL BASIN, SOUTHERN POLAND

Summary
The paralic segment (Namurian A) of the coal-bearing succession of the Upper Silesia Basin reveals deposits with flaser, wavy and lenticular bedding (Figs 2-6), referred here as heterolithic facies association. They are devoid of skeletal fauna remains, but contain in places trace fossils of marine provenience. The heterolithic deposits are interbedded with other facies including marine fossiliferous mudstones (Fig. 8), all together forming intervals, several to 100 m thick. The heterolithic association is here interpreted to have been formed within the nearshore subtidal and intertidal zones. Generation of heteriolithic deposits was associated with a number of marine ingressions, whose presence has been so far documented only on faunistic ground. It is concluded that the heterolithic association can be considered as a palaeoenviromental indicator, and its occurrences may be helpful for regional correlations in the Paralic Series of the Upper Silesia.
