Abstract

PRELIMINARY RESULTS OF ORGANIC COMPOUND ANALYSES IN SOILS, PINE NEEDLES AND LICHENS FROM THE HOLY CROSS MTS AREA (CENTRAL POLAND)

Summary
This report presents the preliminary results of polyaromatic hydrocarbon (PAHs), polychlorobiphenyl (PCBs), pesticide and phenol analyses done on selected soil, pine needle and lichen samples derived from the Holy Cross Mts area (Fig. 1, Tables 1-4). Soils collected from the northern slopes of the Main Range contained two to three times more total organic compounds (especially PAHs) compared to those from the southern slopes. The raised content of PAH was noted particularly in the northeastern part of the Holy Cross Mts. The drop in the P AHs concentration from older to younger pine needles was also observed. PCBs, pesticides and phenols were generally scarce (below detection limits) in the aforementioned media. The content of organics in the study area seems to be lower than that from other parts of Europe.
