Abstract

EMANATIONS OF RADON TO HABITABLE BUILDINGS OF THE BIAŁYSTOK PROVINCE (NE POLAND)

The measurements of indoor Rn-222 concentration were carried aut in 139 houses in the Bialystok region. A charcoal canister (Pico-Rad) were used in experiment. The concentration of radon ranged from 1 Bq/m to 1100 Bq/m3 with the arithmetic mean 36,3 Bq/m3, geometric mean 18,4 Bq/m3 and median 17 Bq/m3. The results had a lognormal distribution. In three houses the level of Rn-222 were above the top limit of 200 Bq/m3. The highest average concentration were present in a cellar (75,5 Bq/m3). A decrease of average activity were observed, 27,7 Bq/m3 (36,6%) - at the ground floor, 22 Bq/m3 (29 %) at the first floor and 8,3 Bq/m3 (11 %) at the higher floors. The average concentration of indoor radon, which reflects the real risk for inhabitants, is 20,5 Bq/m3.
