Abstract

ON METHODOLOGY OF STUDIES ON DENSITY OF CAINOZOIC ROCKS

Summary
The paper presents a critical review of methods used in laboratory measurements of density of Cenozoic rocks. Attention is paid to elements which are the source of errors in density measurements. i.e. neglect of shrinkage of samples of cohesive rocks, changes in structure of non- cohesive rocks, and incomplete saturation with water in time of measurement. Laboratory measurements made for 4 geological units were corrected, showing that the density values are lowered about 0.10 to 0.15 g/cm3 at the average.
The obtained values were subsequently compared with those of density measurements made with the use of radiometric method in boreholes as well as those obtained with the use of universal sonde. Practical significance of inaccuracy of laboratory density measurements for interpretation of gravity anomalies is explained . The paper ends with conclusions precising necessary changes in methods of density measurements and the need of supplementary methodological works on wider use of radiometric density measurements of Cenozoic deposits. The latter are highly important in search for brown coal deposits as well as solving various hydrogeological and geological-engineering problems.
