Abstract

SOME GENERAL PROBLEMS OF QUATERNARY STRATIGRAPHY IN POLAND Summary Some current problems of the Quaternary stratigraphy in Poland are discussed at the background of developments in other fields of geology of the Quaternary. There is an urgent need for regionalization of Quaternary cover in the Polish Lowlands and to introduce the use of quantitative indices for the purposes of correlation in each of the regions. It would be also desirable to revise extents of Pleistocene icesheets, established with reference to distribution of front moraines which often appear older than it was hitherto assumed. Deep incisions marked in intra- Pleistocene surfaces usually are not related to river erosion but rather subglacial processes, which has significant implications for stratigraphy of the Pleistocene. The results of studies on the rate of accumulation in the Pleistocene show that stratigraphy of these deposits comprises only small fragments of the time of duration of the whole Quaternary.
