Abstract

THE USE OF WELL LOG METHODS IN EXPLOITATION OF SULFUR DEPOSITS BY HOT-WATER MINING Summary The interpretation of well logs for establishing mining parameters of sulfur deposit is markedly impeded by problems connected with evaluation of the influence of clay content on properties of sulfur-bearing limestones. The analysis of physical and geophysical properties of Miocene sulfur-bearing rocks made it possible to show validity of the following dependence usable for estimating the degree of sulfur content on the basis of gamma, gamma- gamma and neutron-gamma well logs: S ≈ Vil + (kppgg-kppng / 0,4) where: S - volume con tent of sulfur in %, Vil - volume content of clay minerals in %, kppgg - rock porosity in limestone porosity units, established on the basis of gamma-gamma logs, kppng - rock porosity in limestone porosity units, established on the basis of neutron-gamma logs. Geophysical measurements supply a number of objective data and, at the same time, continuous information on deposit and surrounding rocks. They give information on the top, base and thickness of deposit, structure, lithology, porosity and permeability of deposit series, clay content as well as the degree of exploitation of the deposit. Simultaneous use of geological, geophysical, mining as well geodetic data concerning a given group of boreholes makes possible appropriate prognosis of conditions of exploitation of sulfur deposit.
