Abstract

PALEOTECTONIC CROSS-SECTION THROUGH THE FLUVIOLIMNIC SERIES IN THE SOUTHERN COAL REGION OF THE LUBLIN COAL BASIN

Summary
The paleotectonic, especially facies-thickness analyses represent an useful tool in preliminary treatment of borehole data when lithological, biostratigraphic and other documentations are still incomplete. The obtainable data make it possible to delineate areas under tectonic stress, as well as local elevations and depressions, and to explain lithological-facies changes it deposits. At the same time, paleotectonic cross-sections well display qualitative and quantitative changes in tectonic trends in a given time interval. The use of paleotectonic analysis in surveys of coal basins casts some light on regional geology and it facilitates correlation of coal seams, explains their spatial arrangement, and makes possible delineation of areas subjected to erosion. Paleotectonic cross-section through fluviolimnic series in the Southern Coal Field, Lublin Coal Basin, explains basic sedimentological-tectonic problems encountered there. The conclusions drawn at the basis of facies-thickness analysis show that the use of paleotectonic analysis in surveying new coal basins is fully justified and possible.
