Abstract

IS IT POSSIBLE TO DISCOVER GREAT OIL IN POLAND? Summary Some empirical ascertainments and dynamic geological transtormations are shown to be important tor analysis and prognoses of discovery of oil and gas fields. The tectonic styles of western, central and eastern Carpathians are compared, emphasizing the role of paleotectonic setting in development of „ridge" tectonics in the eastern Carpathians and, therefore, the possibility of existence of deep-seated folds in Polish part of that mountain range. The role of the Meta-Carpathian Swell and Teisseyre-Tornquist tectonic zone is found to be negative as they were creating migration routes for bitumens into platform sedimentary cover and, therefore, contributing to almost complete destruction of some hydrocarbon accumulations the presence of which is evidenced by some relics. It is concluded that any discoveries of giant or large oil and gas deposits of the Bashkirian or North Sea type are impossible in Poland. Despite of such unpromising perspectives, the results hitherto obtained show that further search for oil and gas is purposeful and economically advantageous.
