Uwagi o facji „ammonitico rosso"

The paper deals with "Ammonitico rosso" facies, especially characteristic for margins of Mediterranean Tethys in the Jurassic. In Poland, this facies is known from the high-tatric (2 horizons: Callovian and Kimmeridgian) and sub-tatric (3 horizons: Toarcian, Callovian and Kimmeridgian) series in the Tatra Mts, the Pieniny Klippen Belt, mainly the Czorsztyn (a single, Callovian- Lower Tithonian horizon) and Niedzica (2 horizons: Bathonian-Callovian and Kimmeridgian-Valanginian) series.
Red nodular limestones, typical of that facies, may vary in the mode of origin (early-diagenetic segregation of calcium carbonate, activity of burrowers, solution of calcium carbonate and mechanical disintegration of sediment) and presumably depth at which they have been formed. Several horizons of nodular limestones originated on shoals at depths varying from some tens to hundreds meters. Deeper water horizons of such limestones, often alternating with radiolarite ones (e.g. those from the sub-tatric series in the Tatra Mts and Niedzica series in the Pieniny Klippen Belt), originated in basins and on slopes of shoals, at depths presumably not greater than 1000-2000 m, above CCD. In the Jurassic, Mediterranean part of the Tethys was a narrow, partly landlocked basin, in which CCD was situated at depths smaller than in modern, wide oceanic basins.
