Abstract


STUDIES ON ORGANIC MATTER FROM COPPER-BEARING SHALES IN THE FORE-SUDETIC MONOCLINE

Summary
The paper presents results of studies on bitumens and kerogen separated from the copper-bearing shale in the Fore-Sudetic Monocline. The studies showed marked differentiation in quantities and nature of organic matter. Share of hydrocarbons in bitumens is varying from 8 to 50%. Infrared spectra of bitumens and kerogen show marked differenees in intensity of aliphatic hands and that of carbonyle. Content of sulfur in asphaltene fraction ranges from 1.6 to 4.4%, being the highest in samples of shales with the poorest mineralization. Kerogen appears to be rich in Br (up to 3.5%). The ratio C/N equals 20-50, corresponding to values typical of sapropel deposits. The ratio C/H in kerogen ranges from 15 to 30. Values of the two ratios are highly consistent with those for German Kupferschiefer. Thermic and X-ray analyses also show marked variability of kerogen. δ13C of organic matter is about -27.4% at the average. The marked differentiation in nature of organic matter from the copper-bearing shale in the Fore-Sudetic Monocline may be explained in terms of high variability of conditions of sedimentation and diagenesis, related to mineralization processes (reducing conditions) and oxidating ones (Rote Faule facies). The ratio C/H is markedly higher in kerogen from the copper-bearing shale than in that from „oil shales" (from areas unaffected by mineralization), which may be due to processes of dehydrogeration of organic matter. In the latter processes, effective role was played by sulfur originating in result of reduction of sulfates.
