ORIGIN OF MIDDLE CAMBRIAN ROCKS IN POLISH PART OF THE EAST-EUROPEAN PLATFORM IN THE LIGHT OF PETROGRAPHIC STUDIES

Summary
The studied rocks are characterized by predominance of sandstones (quartz arenites), monotonous in petrography. The results of microscopic studies were interpreted with the use of mathematic methods (cluster analysis and Markov model). The identified microlithofacies were arbitrarily subdivided into high- and low-energy ones. Three-component quantitative map (Fig. 6) shows regional distribution of groups of microlithofacies. Vertical microlithofacies sequences indicative of repeated temporary increase of water energy in sedimentary environment were found to be statistically important in areas where sandstones predominate in thicknes. In turn, vertical microlithofacies sequences indicative of decreasing water energy were found in areas characterized by predominance of mudstones. The results of studies give support for the hypothesis of tidal-storm origin of sediments of that type (cf. Anderton - 1).
