Abstract

BARRIER ROCKS IN UPPER MIOCENE AT SOUTHERN MARGIN OF THE HOLY CROSS MTS. Summary In the Holy Cross Mts, Upper Miocene is represented by rocks of pelitic facies, "Krakowiec Clays", and detrital one, termed as "detrital Sarmatian". Stratigraphic position of these rocks still remains unknown or at least debatable. Studies on textural development of rocks of the two above facies in area between Chmielnik and Bukowa near Klimontów, carried out by the Author, showed their origin in barrier-island coast zone in times of marine regression. There were differentiated rocks of the following facies: open marine, barrier zone (including distal marine slope), main barrier body, barrier flat and inlet as well as lagoon and/or embayment, of both shallow- and deep-water types. Moreover, there were identified channel deposits formed in result of strong, episodic currents. Migration of the barrier, accompanied by progradation of coast line, resulted in very rapid shifts of the above facies in sp~ce or reduction of area occupied by a given facies. The origin of thick packet of barrier-body deposits was facilitated by locally increased rates of subsidence.
