Abstract

MAJOR LINEAMENTS IN THE CARPATHIANS AND THEIR RELATION TO THE KNOWN FAULTS

Summary
Lineaments discussed in this paper are those which are confirmed by data on deep geological structure. Several of them coincide with faults controlled on the basis of geophysical and geological data, as well as dislocations discovered quite early by W. Teisseyre.
The lineament map was compared with the available tectonic, structural and geomorphological ones. Major directions of the lineaments include W - E, NEN - SWS, NW - SE and NE - SW and the lineaments are transcontinental, continental, transregional and regional in character. The age of lineaments, especially those of the transcontinental type, belongs to the most controversial questions.
The results of the hitherto completed geophysical and geophysical studies and theoretical analyses appear insufficient for unequivocal dating. However, heterochroneous nature of the lineaments is beyond the question.
The depth range of lineaments also appears disputable. It may be assumed on theoretical grounds that the longest lineaments should be traceable downwards to the greatest depth, even down to the Upper Mantle. It may be also assumed, especially in the light of the plate tectonics, that continuing movement of astenosphere should lead to obliteration of old fractures. We think that this problem should be at least partly solved in the near future by the use of some other methods.
