Abstract

VARISCAN BASEMENT STRUCTURES NORTH OF THE UPPER SILESIAN COAL BASIN

Summary
Deep drillings made by the o.il industry and Geological Institute in the years 1967-1975, and geophysical surveys gave the basis for reconstruction of Variscan structures marked along northern margin of the Upper Silesian Coal Basin. Till now the course of these structures used to be interpreted taking into account position of the basin in the Variscan system. The analysis of top surface of the Carboniferous (Visean and, locally, Namurian A) showed presence of several NW - SE oriented blocks, similarly as in basement of the Wielkopolska region (13, 14). The identified blocks appear elevated towards NE margin of the Upper Silesian Coal Basin and - in that direction their deep intersectional level is found to be characterized by a scale structure, involving Lower Carboniferous, Devonian, Silurian, and older strata (6, 7, 8). Results of analysis of thickness and facies of the Permian (Fig. 1) gave further support for the compiled model of structure of the Variscan basement.
