Abstract

CYCLICITY OF SEDIMENTATION VERSUS STRATIGRAPHIC SUBDIVISION OF DEVONIAN STROMATOPOROID-CORAL LIMESTONES IN
THE HOLY CROSS MTS.

Summary
The paper presents an attempt to solve the question of correlations of strata belonging to Devonian (Givetian- Frasnian) stromatoporoid-coral complex of the Holy Cross Mts. Facies analysis of the most complete section from the vicinities of Bolechowice. (Jóźwica-Góra Łgawa section) made it possible to establish 3 cycles in strata of the biostromal phase, and the fourth in strata corresponding to the reef phase as interpreted by Szulczewski (52). The cycles (especially the cycle Il) display the nature of upward-shallowing sequences typical of carbonate shelves. Basal member of the cycles are represented by thin beds of micritic or grained limestones with marly intercalations and fauna of the open sea type, traceable even on the regional scale.
The members correspond to break in carbonate sedimentation due to transgressive pulses. Therefore, they may be used as a basis for chronostratigraphic correlations. The sedimentary cyclicity makes also possible testing correlation value of several faunistic groups and to base biostratigraphy on ecosystem premises. Moreover, it appears to be a potential tool in making supraregional correlations.
