Abstract

ON SEDIMENTATION OF THE UPPER BUNTSANDSTEIN IN THE PERIBALTIC SYNECLIZE

Summary
Microfauna and microflora found in rocks of the Elbląg Formation showed that the strata hitherto dated at the Middle Buntsandtein actually represent the Upper Buntsandstein. It follows that the strata may be treated as equivalents of clastic sediments developed in marine Rhot. facies in the Polish Lowlands. Lithological section of the Elbląg Formation comprises conglomeratic-sandy sediments in its lower part, and sandstone-mudstone and claystone ones in the upper. Lithological composition, sedimentary structures, mineral composition, and red colour make possible assignation of the rocks to the lithological association of the red beds type. The sediments originated in an environment of brided, meandering rivers, flood plains, and intermittent water basins.
Several uranium-bearing horizons with uranium mineralization of the sandstone type have been found in the Elbląg Formation. The uranium-bearing bodies are related to sandstones of meandering lateral channels, mid-channel bars, and river bank bars, and those from flood plains.
