Abstract

NEW DATA FOR STRATIGRAPHY OF MIOCENE ALABASTER GYPSUM DEPOSIT AT ŁOPUSZKA WIELKA NEAR KAŃCZUGA Summary The paper presents results of geological and paleontological analyses of 12 fully cored sections of drillings from the vicinities of the Łopuszka Wielka alabaster gypsum mine (Polish Eastern Carpathians, see Fig. 1). The drillings were made by the Geological Enterprise, Cracow (Table 1). The studies involved dating of sedimentary series and reconstruction of facies and tectonic relations. Beneath Quaternary cover there were recognized (Fig. 2): Lower Sarmatian rocks developed in the Anomalinoides dividens - Elphidium reginum facies, Grabovian rocks - "Grabowiec-Bogucice Beds" with the Błońsk facies at the base (an assemblage of small bivalves and plant-eating gastropods with brackish fauna features, Bulimina insignis, etc.), Bochenian - Chodenice member (= „Chodenice Beds") with a series of gypsum rocks and accompanying assemblage (Spiratella, Radiolaria, Globigerina - mass occurrences, Nucula, Vermetus, Vermes, fish otoliths, elements of the Grabowiec-fauna), and strata older than the Miocene. Correlations with deep borehole column Łopuszka W. 1 PN well show parautochtoneous character of the Miocene in the studied area. Attention is paid to similarities in tectono-stratigraphic structure in the S-N running cross-section which passes through Łopuszka Wielka and Zgłobice near Tarnów (8, 10, 1). The section comprising Bochenian (Upper Bochenian), Grabovian and Sarmatian is shown to display the eastern featur.es. The range of the "Kosovian" concept better reflects major features in development of strata in relation to the Bochenian (Upper Bochenian) - Grabovian of the Łopuszka section (Fig. 1 A). The Anomalinoides - Elphidium reginum biofacies evidences paleogeographic connections with the east. Taking this into account it is concluded that the Łopuszka Wielka section reflects connections between the eastern and central Paratethys.
