Abstract

JURASSIC AND LOWER CRETACEOUS ARTICULATE CRINOIDS OF THE PIENINY KLIPPEN BELT, CARPATHIANS, IN POLAND

Summary
Analysis of stratigraphic distribution of articulate crinoids in the Jurassic and Lower Cretaceous calcareous deposits of the Pieniny Klippen Belt (Carpathians), shows their restricted significance for stratigraphic purposes. Only some taxons distinguished in Fig. 1 may be used for regional or local correlations.
The processes of formation of crinoidal limestones in the Pieniny Klippen Bełt are yet poorly known. A theoretical model of accumulation of crinoid fragments includes f our zones (Z1 – Z4: Z1 - growth site zone; Z2 - z one below growth site, characterized by lower-energy environment; Z3, Z4 - zones above growth site, characterized by higher-energy environment.
The investigated articulate crinoids used three different modes of anchoring their stems in the bottom sediment: by cirri, by discoidal terminations, and by attachement of calyces.
