Abstract

THE CALEDONIDES IN THE HOLY CROSS MTS - DO THEY EXIST? Summary The main tectonic structures of the Holy Cross Mts are of Variscan age. These structures are one on the foreland of the Variscan Orogen in central and western Europe and occupy a transitional position between the orogenic area and the Precambrian East-European Platform (Fig. 1). Variscan structures (Figs 2, 3) of the Holy Cross Mts came into being as the result of movements in the Paleozoic cover of the epicratonic zone (Figs 4--6). These structures are one on two blocks of the earth's crust (Kielce block and Łysogóry block), whose tectonic histories differ. On these structures of the epicratonic zone the Variscan Orogen is overthrusted.
