Abstract

THE ROLE OF MICROORGANISMS IN DEGRADATION OF MINERALS, ESPECIALLY SULFUR, SULFIDES AND SULFATES Summary All rocks regardless of their origin undergo alterations under the influence of different factors . Microorganisms contribute to these processes to a large extent. When considering the group of thionic bacteria, which oxidize sulphur and sulphides, the present author indicates the role played by bacteria in processes occurring in natural geological environments. It is shown that bacteria are present in solutions derived from deposits of well-known metal sulphides, and that they were active in processes releasing metals from minerals. Particular attention has been paid to a possibility of utilizing the bacteria in detoxication of garbage or waste deposits, as well as in secondary recovery of many valuable metals.
