Abstract

SHEAR STRENGTH OF COARSE-GRAINED SOIL (SOIL MIXTURE)

Summary
The article presents the results of investigations of the shear strength of fragments formed of the compact Krakowiec Clay and of the Carboniferous sandstone, mixed with the plastic clay paste. For comparison, also the shear strength of compact clay fragments mixed with medium- grained sand has been determined. As a result of the present study it has been found that the shear resistance of the studied mixtures is a function of percentage of coarser fragments in a plastic or loose filler, while it is hardly related to a diameter of fragments. The strength and the parameters of the shear resistance, as well as cohesion and angle of friction of a mixture, change in a non-linear fashion with increasing percentage of fragments. The maximum cohesion is attained on average in mixtures with 50% of fragments, and generally within the limits of 25 to 75%. It is related to the shape of fragments and to the hulk density of fragments and of a filler.
The formulas have been given, defining resistance and angle of internal friction of a mixture in terms of cohesion and angle of friction of a dense filler, and of angle of fragments' internal friction.
