Abstract

ON PRESENT VERTICAL MOVEMENTS IN TATRA MTS. AND PODHALE Summary Analysis of results of repeated precise levelling of 1933, 1954 and 1974 enabled a preliminary evaluation of recent vertical movements in the Tatra Mts. and Podhale area, along a section that runs across main geotectonic units of this part of the Carpathians: Orawa-Nowy Targ Depression, Pieniny Klippen Belt, Podhale Synclinorium and northern border of the Tatra Mts. A southern part of the synclinorium was found to be probably slowly uplifted if referred to a bench-mark at Nowy Targ at a northern border of Podhale. The uplifting in Podhale is however small, close to a measuring error. It increases to about 0.4 mm a year at the edge of the Tatra Mts., in a marginal zone of the transversal elevation of Koszysta. A variation of movements deeper within the Tatra Mts. is to be analyzed in future. Noted vertical movements show a step-like pattern. They comprise tectonic blocks of deep-seated origin as uniting in common dynamic behaviour fragments of different geotectonic elements. These blocks are partly connected with a transversal structural subdivision that in Podhale area has a greater whereas in the Tatra Mts. - a comparable influence on present dynamics as the principal longitudinal division. The elevation of Koszysta in the Tatra Mts., extended northwards under a flysch of Podhale, forms an element of a transversal subdivision. A single correlation between a type of morphostructure and direction of present movements in its area was found not to occur, at least in some cases.
