Abstract

THE USE OF SELECTED PLANKTONIC MICROORGANISM GROUPS IN STRATIGRAPHY OF THE UPPER JURASSIC AND LOWER CRETACEOUS OF THE POLISH CARPATHIANS Summary The paper presents the hitherto obtained results of studies involving the use of calpionellids, stomiospherids, and nannoconuses for stratigraphic purposes. In Poland such works were carried out mainly in the Carpathians, in order to precise the age of strata in which the microorganisms occur in masses. Calpionellids are known from the Pieniny Klippen Belt (facies of nodular, pseudonodular, hornstone, and calpionellid limestones), Tatra Mts (pelagic limestone facies), and Fłysch Carpathians (limestones of the Cieszyn "Beds", Stramberk-type limestones of the Bachowice Zone, and Kruhel exotic rock bodies). The occurrence of stomiospherids is mainly related to the Flysch Carpathians, where they were used to establish the age and correlate the Cieszyn "Beds". They were also reported from the nodular, calpionellid, and hornstone limestones and radiolarites in the Pieniny Klippen Belt. The use of nannoconuses for stratigraphic purposes was the subject of a few papers in Poland. Organisms assigned to that group were described from the fucoid marls in the Flysch Carpathians and reported from the hornstone limestones in the Pieniny Klippen Belt.
