Abstract

NEW SITE OF THE EARLY CARBONIFEROUS FAUNA: JACZKÓW (LNTRA-SUDETIC BASIN)

Summary
A new locality of fossil fauna has been found in the Early Carboniferous sediments of the north-west part of the Intrasudetic Trough. The faunal remnants occur in the fine-grained sediments of the Late Visean succession in the vicinity of Jaczków (Fig. l, 2). Sedimentation in a low-energy, shallow marine embayment was sometimes influenced by an active fan-delta front in this area . A soft muddy bottom was densely inhabited by brackish water suspension and deposit feeders. At locality studied the fossils of brachiopods predominate, pelecypods and gastropods occur less frequently, while crinoids and cephalopods are found only sporadically (Fig. 3). Two distinct fossil assemblages can be easily distinguished at this locality. One group represents in situ accumulations of shells in muddy and often bioturbated sediments. The fossils are a bundant and well preserved. The second group is accompanied with relatively coarse-grained sediments. In result of postdeath transport it is characterized by not abundant and poorly preserved faunal remnants. Further, more detail studies of the fossils will help in paleoecological and paleogeographic reconstruction of the Late Visean sedimentary basin of the Intrasudetic Trough.
